Many of the laws on the books are there to give the prosecution some leverage against someone who doesn't get properly defended in court. It usually takes accompaniment by a lawyer to make the court play by the literal rules. If you walk in there by yourself, the prosecution will trounce you because they know that you can't call their bluff. Ever notice how long it takes to successfully prosecute someone who has a skillful legal defense team? It can take months or even years. But if you walk in there without a lawyer, you'll be done like toast in minutes.
